Summer Solstice
In the Northern Hemisphere, from where I usually write, the summer solstice occurs when the sun reaches 0°00” of Cancer.
This year, that occurred on June 21 at 1:25 am PST.
At the summer solstice, the sun reaches its peak illumination.
Thinking of the time from sunrise to sunset, the sun is at high noon.
You might wonder why the summer solstice, a time associated with brightness, heat, and fire, occurs when the sun reaches the water sign of Cancer.
In Ancient Mesopotamia, the harvest was over in June.
People traveled to where the Tigris and Euphrates rivers met at the Persian Gulf.
To eat crabs. 🦀
To supplement their protein intake during the high heat of summer.
The zodiac constellations weren’t abstract symbols.
Their original meaning came from what was happening on the ground about 10,000 years ago.
Litha
Litha begins at the culmination of the summer solstice, this year on June 21, depending on your location and time zone.
And continues until the wheel turns again on August 7 at Lughnassadh, the beginning of the harvest season.
In the Northern Hemisphere, Beltane ushered in the first motion of summer. At Litha, we’re at its height.
The sun is at his greatest power.
The growing season is in full swing, and the first fruits of our labor are becoming visible.
Midsummer was celebrated with fire.
Bonfires blazed on hilltops, and people leapt through the flames to invite fertility, good fortune, protection, and an abundant harvest.
In some regions, a flaming wheel was rolled downhill into a river. If the wheel remained lit, it foretold a plentiful harvest. If the flames went out, it was considered an ill omen.
Wreaths woven from herbs and flowers were cast into the fire or water as offerings for abundance and blessing. Some historians believe these midsummer wreaths eventually evolved into the tradition of throwing the wedding bouquet.
Summer was closely associated with fertility—of the fields, the animals, and the people. It was a season for weddings, love magic, and learning the secrets of fertility from the natural world itself.

In modern Pagan traditions, Litha is often associated with maturity.
The flirtation and awakening of Beltane have ripened into experience.
And although we stand in the brightest moment of the year, this is also the turning point.
From here, we begin our slow descent toward the dark half of the wheel.
🌕 The Flowering Bloom
Litha corresponds to the Full Moon.
It's a time of total illumination.
The sun is at his greatest power.
The seed that germinated at Yule, the Winter Solstice, now reveals itself.
It's a time to pause and ask:
What has emerged since sunrise? Since Ostara?
What has been refined since Beltane?
What began as possibility has become visible.
If Beltane was the Flaming Bud, Litha is the Flowering Bloom.
Nothing remains hidden.
If this were a burlesque show, the clothing and pasties have been peeled away, and you're standing there—stark naked.
It reminds me of The Sun card.
Full illumination doesn't simply reveal beauty.
It reveals what’s thriving.
And what can’t continue.
If the structures we've built since Yule can no longer support the life growing through them, something begins to loosen.
Perhaps it’s an identity, a belief, or a way of living that no longer resonates or is becoming too small for who we’re becoming.
The longest day of the year is also a turning point.
At the height of light, we begin our slow descent into darkness.
🏴☠️ Realignment
The Sabian Symbol for 1° Cancer is:
A furled and an unfurled flag displayed from a vessel.
A ship is preparing to sail under a new flag.
It speaks of realignment.
A turning point.
A dramatic change in heart.
A willingness to change course when our deepest values no longer match the direction we're heading.
Sometimes that means changing a lifestyle, leaving a community, ending a relationship, changing careers, embracing a new spiritual path, or even becoming a citizen of a different country.
Realignment isn't about abandoning ourselves.
It's about returning to ourselves.
In its highest expression, this symbol speaks of flexibility, adaptability, and the courage to endure temporary discomfort in service of something deeper: self-integrity.
There comes a moment when we recognize that continuing as we have would require betraying ourselves.
So we lower one flag.
And raise another.
Sometimes the bravest thing we can do is close one door, change course, and sail toward a life that better reflects who we've become.
🥀 Shadow of Familiarity
There is shadow too.
Sometimes we know it's time to change course, but we cling to what's familiar.
Not because it still fits.
But because we worry about disappointing others.
About leaving a community.
About the changing desire of our own hearts.
About who we might become if we choose a different path.
So we stay.
We go down with the ship.
Or sacrifice ourselves to please others or keep the peace.
Perhaps because remaining loyal to an old life feels safer than becoming fully ourselves.
But Litha reminds us that realignment isn't betrayal.
It's an act of integrity.

Where is Litha unfolding in your life?
In those areas of your life, ask yourself:

✨ Where are you sacrificing yourself to please others or keep the peace?
✨ Where are you being invited to lower one flag and raise another?
✨ What would realignment look like in your life?
✨ What could become possible if you trusted that choosing integrity isn’t betrayal?

Choose one aspect of yourself that has come into full bloom.
Not who you hope to become.
Who you already are.
Stand in the sunlight.
Or before a mirror.
Or beside a flower in full bloom.
Ask yourself:
✨ What in me is no longer willing to remain hidden?
Take a few slow breaths.
Notice your posture.
Your expression.
Your breath.
Your body already knows how to inhabit this version of you.
Nothing needs to be added.
Nothing needs to be rehearsed.
Simply stand there.
Visible.
If it feels right, place one hand over your heart and another over your belly.
Feel the life growing through you.
Notice what feels fully alive.
Notice what has become too small to contain you.
Imagine lowering one flag.
And raising another.
One that reflects the deepest truth of who you are becoming.
When you're ready, say:
✨ I honor the life growing through me.
✨ I choose integrity over familiarity.
✨ May I have the courage to bloom in my own time.
Carry that feeling with you as the Wheel continues to turn.

Every flowering bloom begins as a flaming bud.
As the wheel turns, every blossom eventually bears fruit.
